June 28, 2017 Canadian Ophthalmological Society Launches
See the Possibilities Campaign

The Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) recently launched its first public awareness campaign, See the Possibilities / Voir les Possibilités, in honor of National Vision Health Month.

The COS initiated the campaign after identifying a need to improve public, government, health care professional, and stakeholder awareness of the unique skills and training of ophthalmologists. The goal of the three-year campaign is to help educate Canadians about the important role of ophthalmologists as medical and surgical leaders in eye health care.

Told through the voices of Canadian patients who share inspiring stories about their sight restoration, See the Possibilities / Voir les Possibilités demonstrates the transformative effect ophthalmologists have on the lives of their patients.

Videos and patient experiences will be presented online, on social media, and through traditional media outreach. To learn more about the COS campaign, visit: www.seethepossibilities.ca or www.voirlespossibilites.ca.

June 2, 2017 ICO Member ICO Member Spotlight: Syrian Ophthalmological Society

The Syrian Ophthalmological Society (SOS) was founded in 1965 and counts approximately 90 ophthalmologists as members.

The society’s current focus is on recruiting and training young doctors, but SOS Director of General Relations Dr. Abdul Aziz Badla notes their greatest challenge is the inability to obtain outside visas, meaning young Syrian ophthalmologists cannot attend international conferences and benefit from the educational opportunities they offer. “As we are unable to travel,” Dr. Badla says, “it would be immensely helpful if ophthalmologists can come here and share their knowledge with us through creation of courses.”

The SOS recently held their annual conference in Damascus, Syria, to an enthusiastic response, with almost 550 participants attending. The ICO presented multiple talks at the conference via video presentations.

If you are interested in collaborating with the SOS on courses and/or other educational support, please email Dr. Badla at: ‪abdulaziz.badla@yahoo.com‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
