The ICO Guide to Effective CPD/CME is a practical resource covering concepts and questions regarding continuing professional development (CPD) and continuing medical education (CME), reinforcing that medical education goes far beyond certification.

The book, updated in March 2017, is presented in a problem-based format and enables the user to navigate easily to sections they find most relevant. The guide covers CPD/CME concepts, the individual’s role in CPD, the educator’s role in CPD, organizational development of CPD, and the regulator’s role in CPD.

Dr. Helena Filipe, Chair of the ICO Continuing Professional Development Committee, presented the ICO Guide to Effective CPD/CME at the November 2016 European CME Forum in Amsterdam.

The Magrabi–ICO Cameroon Eye Institute (MICEI) in Yaoundé, Cameroon––the only regional subspecialty training center in Francophone Africa––hosted an ICO Residency Program Directors (RPD) course 1–2 September 2017.

More than 30 attendees from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, Guinea, and Togo participated in the course, which is designed to help residency director’s enhance educational effectiveness (eg, methods of instruction, skill assessment, behavior adjustment, and competence measurement) through interactive means.

Professor Côme Ebanna Mvogo, head of the University of Yaoundé and President of the Cameroonian Society of Ophthalmology, presented a lecture and expressed enthusiastic desire for future collaborations with the ICO and MICEI, sentiments shared by the department leaders in attendance from other countries. Dr. Henry Nkumbe, MICEI Medical Director, was extremely pleased with the success of the meeting, the supportive comments from all attendees, and potential for future collaborations.
