The African Ophthalmology Council (AOC) Leadership Development Program (LDP) for Anglophone Africa celebrated the graduation of its first class on 15 August 2017, in Kampala, Uganda. The two-day LDP meeting, held in conjunction with the College of Ophthalmology of Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa (COECSA) Scientific Congress, covered a wide range of topics and was organized with support from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the ICO, and COECSA.

Francophone Africa’s first LDP class will graduate in conjunction with the Société Africaine Francophone d'Ophtalmologie (SAFO) Congress on 3 December 2017 in Dakar, Senegal. ICO Vice President Neeru Gupta, MD, PhD, MBA, will serve on the faculty for the second year.

The LDPs in Anglophone and Francophone Africa focus on meeting the needs of future leaders in Sub-Saharan Africa. With a strong and invested faculty, the LDP courses follow a model set by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and cover a broad spectrum of subjects, including advocacy, engagement, society strengthening, navigating challenges, and building coalitions.

ICO Vice President Kgaogelo “Eddie” Legodi, MD, took office as President of the African Ophthalmology Council at the COECSA Congress. Dr. Legodi will join the American Academy of Ophthalmology Board of Trustees as one of two international trustees in January 2018.
