October 5, 2017 Residency Program Directors Course in Cameroon

The Magrabi–ICO Cameroon Eye Institute (MICEI) in Yaoundé, Cameroon––the only regional subspecialty training center in Francophone Africa––hosted an ICO Residency Program Directors (RPD) course 1–2 September 2017.

More than 30 attendees from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, Guinea, and Togo participated in the course, which is designed to help residency director’s enhance educational effectiveness (eg, methods of instruction, skill assessment, behavior adjustment, and competence measurement) through interactive means.

Professor Côme Ebanna Mvogo, head of the University of Yaoundé and President of the Cameroonian Society of Ophthalmology, presented a lecture and expressed enthusiastic desire for future collaborations with the ICO and MICEI, sentiments shared by the department leaders in attendance from other countries. Dr. Henry Nkumbe, MICEI Medical Director, was extremely pleased with the success of the meeting, the supportive comments from all attendees, and potential for future collaborations.

October 26, 2017 MICEI Celebrates World Sight Day in Cameroon

The Magrabi–ICO Cameroon Eye Institute (MICEI) in Yaoundé, Cameroon––the only regional subspecialty training center in Francophone Africa––hosted World Sight Day festivities on 12 October 2017, with more than 150 guests in attendance.

The celebratory event––presided over by the Minister of Health and the Secretary of State at the Ministry of Health––included: 

  • Presentation of a World Sight Day awareness song, written and performed by MICEI staff member, Ms. Nassang Mimba. 
  • Donation of a children’s book to Yaoundé orphans that addresses preventive eye care, given by the book’s author, Dr. Kenneth Youngstein, founder and chief executive officer of Biocom, an Orbis partner. 
  • Donation of five laptop computers with the “Active Communication Training Simulator” to improve MICEI staff communication with patient families, Institute partners, and government officials, donated by simulator developer, Dr. Kenneth Youngstein. 
  • An Orbis Flying Eye Hospital Training of Trainers course for the wet lab and training of orthoptists. Trainees included three MICEI staff members, professors from two of Cameroon’s Universities, and eye care providers from public hospitals.

November 27, 2017 Impact Loan Offers Innovative Approach to Preventing Blindness

To support upwards of 18,000 cataract surgeries over the next five years, the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) has committed US$2 million to the Magrabi ICO Cameroon Eye Institute (MICEI) in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

The Cameroon Development Impact Loan is results-based, with investors providing upfront financing and donor organizations repaying investors their principal plus a return based on realized performance in delivering outcomes.

MICEI–– the only regional subspecialty-training center in Francophone Africa––provides comprehensive, high-quality, and affordable eye care in an underserved region. Organizations contributing to the success of this endeavor are the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, The Fred Hollows Foundation, Sightsavers, the Africa Eye Foundation, and D. Capital Partners.
