What are our strengths?

What are the greatest strengths of international ophthalmology and the ICO/IFOS (e.g., broad scope of practice, experience with education)?

The greatest strength is the enormous talent pool of the membership in clinical skills, teaching, research, management, leadership, communication and clout with people that matter. This should be leveraged optimally to advance our profession and what it stands for.

The only shared, and recognized organizational entity that can speak to, and in the name, of ophthalmology around the world. As such, it has the potential for gathering expertise and information from diverse, relevant sources, and for using that talent and information to help establish policies, positions, educational opportunities and the like

ICO has the mission to carry the banner for dedication to preserve and restore vision for all people worldwide. Because the opthalmological society has various fields each comprising a subcommitte, we need ICO, a society which unifies these fields.

ICO has a number of excellent and talented ophthalmologists.

we are the only group that represents all the ophthalmologists in the world. Historically we have held the leadership position. Ophthalmologists are also essential in any realistic future system for eye care delivery. We also have a very creditable record of training

Education and communication are also growing as never before. ICO/IFOS may take advantage of such instruments to promote health care.

(From a pediatric ophthalmology viewpoint)

The ICO/IFOS is a forum to bring together ophthalmologists from all parts of the world and could be a way of disseminating educational information and also where to get other information that presently exists, e.g., the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.

It could be a forum for individual countries, regions, institutions to discuss their needs and seek knowledge and available individuals or facilities that might meet these needs.

I agree with the comments already made on the enormous talent pool of the membership, the global nature of the entity, the potential for gathering expertise from diverse sources, and for using that talent and our potential for education and standardization of eye care.

We have an excellent plan but we need to increase our ability to implement that plan, and this requires greater funding. We should concentrate on programs where there are major gaps not already fulfilled by other organizations and work in collaboration with other organizations to make the greatest possible impact.

We need to increase our contact with research organizations to improve those areas where the two arms would overlap most, such as epidemiology, genetics, and infectious diseases.

We should make a greater impact through the Internet and also have a listing of the best teaching websites that are currently on the Internet with a summary of the information available on those websites and this information should be periodically updated. Subspecialty societies in our membership should be utilized to its maximum in order to help obtain these goals.

It is a large platform where expertise concerning education and clinical practice in ophthalmology can be and should be discussed. However, since most of the continents haven’t inventarized yet the potential resources in knowledge and expertise in these fields of ophthalmology, globalization of ophthalmology is not achieved yet.

I think the greatest strengths of International ophthlamology are

(1) Pooling of experince on a world-wide scale to try and provide answers for the search for ways of delivering high standards of care at affordable prices in different countries each with different requirments.

(2) Increasing world-wide awareness of the problems faced in different countries.

(3) Providing a forum through which appropriate help can be channelled to provide education and training for long-term improvement of services in under developed countries as well as possibly supplementing the many short term projects which provide immediate care e.g. cataract camps etc.
