Top Priorities for ICO/IFOS?

What should be the top priorities for action by the ICO/IFOS for the next five years (e.g., focus on training in developing countries, define models for use by societies, etc.)?

My priorities:

1. IFOS / ICO must be the liaison between all national and supranational socities.

Lines of action:

a) Span all the information within societies and
members. Get as many e-mails as it can be possible.
Create a periodically express letter with general
items. Have presence all around the world every year

b) Disseminate global information. WHOs resolutions IAPB actions, Results in 20/20 actions, strategies, etc.

2. Education.

a) International Guidelines.
b) Standarization of residency programs
c) Fellowships.
d) Education in ophthalmology for general
practitioners.
e) Evidence based ophthalmology
f) Concentrate and disseminate links for ophthalmology atlas.

Priorities in my opinion are:
1. Education on ophthalmology for doctors
2. Education on prevetable eye diseases for public by cerating and publishing views on different diseases (Surgeon General's announcements)
3. Education on ethics.

The top priority for next five years should be focused on education in developing countries. We must formulate one or two models. This model should not be a total duplication of existing models. ICO should be involved very actively alongwith the regional society at every stage i.e. from planning to implementation.

Even if each society is trying to do its own survey, I think the ICO should standardize and lead a more regional survey on ophthalmic diseases and problems.

The top priorities for action by ICO/IFOS in the next 5 years should be the diffusion, in developing countries, of the possibility to acquire and spread new and effective therapeutic approaches.

From the standpoint of education I would like to draw attention to the educational resource that I have already developed (www.eyepathologist.com). The EyePathologist was developed because of a serious shortage of Ophthalmic pathologists worldwide and a paucity of persons currently choosing a career in Ophthalmic Pathology. Moreover The Eyepathologist was developed with a long term goal of being updated and improved in perpetuity. I am currently in search of a home base for this resource (perhaps one or more specific professional societies that will oversee its maintenace) with the assistance of an editorial board. From its outset The EyePathologist has been planned to filter content based on the background of the user at Login, but this has not yet been installed because of a lack of financial support. For example trainees in Ophthalmology could be exposed to those specific diseases that the Ophthalmology community consider important among the almost 6,000 diseases listed. The same can be done for medical students, pathologists, laypersons, etc. Also, multiple choice examinations are still on hold and could be valuable in assessing trainee progress and even in CME and examinations related to knowledge about diseases that affect vision. ICO/IFOS could become a major force in the longterm survival of The EyePathologist and I will be happy to discuss the subject with appropriate members of ICO/IFOS. It is my firm believe that ICO/IFOS may be the ideal Society to inherit The EyePathologist.

Priorities:

Believe they are listed in: Tabl 2: Current ICO/IFOS Programs, Initiatives and Services (page 666 of our IFOS, ICO, Milestones in Klin. Monatsbl. Augenheilkd..( August 2005).

Perhaps we should encourage the societes and
particularly the YOUNGER members to
comment, criticize the ICO Clinical Guidelines etc.

The successful colleagues of the ICO test should
be published in the local journals, the best in international journals!

Encourage ICO Foundation along the lines of
our US colleagues.

How to do this (which gets at your "priorities"): by becoming an even more forceful and effective advocate for what is RIGHT in ophthamology and eye care. Initiatives like the clinical guideliness are important, as are "ten commandments" for eithical professionals, educational materials, suggestions on how best to meet the needs of the least-well served, etc etc.

The top priorities for ICO and IFOS should be to focus on training in developing countries for all levels of ophthalmology. This should gradually improve the delivery of ophthalmic health care throughout the world
