How ophthalmologic societies can contribute to preservation of vision

Among the ways that ophthalmologic societies can contribute to preservation and restoration of vision:

• Participate in and support the VISION 2020 campaign in your country and region
  
  
• Take an active role in World Sight Day, the second Thursday in October of each year
  
  
• Initiate or enhance programs to preserve vision in your country and region
  
  
• Develop/enhance programs for education of ophthalmology residents and subspecialists, medical students and allied eye personnel for underserved areas
  
  
• Encourage residencies to allocate at least five percent of slots to individuals from developing countries
  
  
• Advocate for ophthalmology to be a required part of the medical school curriculum
  
  
• Develop opportunities for "twinning" with societies and institutions in developing countries or underserved areas
  
  
• Enhance continuing education focused on needs of communities and the public
