The ICO can't respond to individual inquiries
Unfortunately, the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) does not have the resources to respond to inquiries from patients and their families about specific eye conditions or their treatment.
We do, however, offer links on the Eye Site to other resources for the public related to ophthalmology and vision.
(The ICO is the executive body and operational arm of the International Federation of Ophthalmological Societies (IFOS).)Information about ophthalmology and eye care
The ICO's Eye Site offers links to information and resources on:
- various eye conditions and diseases and how they are treated by ophthalmologists, and how to protect your vision and prevent blindness
- how to find an ophthalmologist
- support services available to people with low vision and blindness
- preservation of vision efforts around the world and the organizations involved
- the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO), including its mission, goals, programs, members and how to contact it
- news of international ophthalmology, eye care and the ICO.
What are ophthalmologists?
Ophthalmologists are physicians who specialize in the medical and surgical care of the eyes and visual system and in the prevention of eye disease and injury.
An ophthalmologist is a medically trained specialist who can deliver total eye care (i.e., vision services, eye examinations, medical eye care and surgical eye care), diagnose general diseases of the body and treat ocular manifestations of systemic diseases.
