Medical Student Education

The increasing age of the world population, high prevalence of common problems such as eye injury and red eye, and importance of vision in the information age support the need to expand ophthalmic medical student education.

The ICO Task Force on Medical Student Education seeks to include appropriate ophthalmic education for all medical students as part of the complete physician education and to offer assistance and resources in regions where it is not yet included.

The ICO Task Force on Medical Student Education is led by Professor Susan Lightman, FRCOphth, and Professor Peter McCluskey, MD.

Task Force Activities:

  • Developing and implementing the Curriculum for Ophthalmic Education of Medical Students
  • Developing and implementing the ICO Medical Student Handbook
  • Creating a database of eye units worldwide that are willing to offer ophthalmology electives to medical students
