Welcome from the WOC2018 President

Clínica Barraquer

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

The next World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC 2018) will be held in our wonderful Barcelona in June 16-19, 2018. Sponsored by the International Council of Ophthalmology, the WOC is the most comprehensive and global event of our specialty. For this occasion, with the joint collaboration of the Spanish Ophthalmological Society (SEO), the European Ophthalmological Society (SOE), the Spanish Society of Implant & Refractive Surgery (SECOIR), the Catalan Society of Ophthalmology (SCO), and the Barraquer Institute (BI), we are working to make WOC2018 a lifetime experience for all attendants.

Barcelona, once a hidden pearl of the Mediterranean, has become one of the most desired destinies for tourism and congresses. It treasures a huge number of attractions, from a millennial old quartier which retains its Roman street plan and medieval flavor to the stunning works of Gaudí — Spain’s most famous architect. It offers dozens of museums including those dedicated to Picasso or to Miró, all the way to Barça’s, Barcelona’s world famous football club. Barcelona is almost as lively at night as it is during the day and it has a unique, friendly and exciting atmosphere, which provides the visitor with a truly unforgettable experience.

One glance at Barcelona’s official website will make you fall in love with our city. You should allow yourself some leisure time to enjoy everything that Barcelona and its surroundings have to offer.

The city’s geographical position confers it a privileged mild climate, especially balmy in late spring. It also makes Barcelona easy to reach, with direct flights from most cities in the world. The congress venue, FIRA Barcelona, is one of the largest and most up-to-date in Europe. Designed by the Pritzker prize-winner Japanese architect Toyo Ito, it is located in a new business development area, connected to the public transport network, close to the airport and few minutes from downtown Barcelona.

The WOC2018 Scientific Program Committee is working to achieve an outstanding and innovative program with topics for everyone. I am very pleased and honored to welcome you in Barcelona to share knowledge, experience and the latest technology in Ophthalmology.
