This guide offers a simplified classification system, recommended examination intervals, and suggestions for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy. Organized by VISION 2020, the guide is available in English and Spanish.

The guide is built through a framework of workshops held throughout Latin America between 2009-2011.

These workshops allowed a group of physicians from different countries and organizations to discuss strategies and action plans that would allow for the development of a protocol to orient future blindness prevention programs for diabetic retinopathy in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The resource includes guidelines the classification, detection, and treatment of diabetic retinopathy.  It also includes information on how to prevent diabetic retinopathy and educate the public about the issue.  The guide ends with information on how to create a retinopathy program, evidence concerning prevention and treatment, and a list of useful resources.
