This article describes visual impairment over a 20-year period and its associations with age-related eye diseases and socioeconomic factors in the Beaver Dam Eye Study.

Few population-based studies have provided estimates of the incidence of visual impairment over a long period. This information can be used to assess temporal trends and projecting the long-term risk of developing visual impairment and the need for resources to care for visually impaired people.
