This document offers a briefing paper that can be shared with advocacy allies, advice on advocating, a brief introduction to the Millennium Development Goals and Open Working Group, and background information.

This resource primarily provides helpful guidance and advice about advocating for universal eye health.

The document references the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the year 2015: MDGs are eight international development goals that were established following the Millennium Summit of the United Nations in 2000, following the adoption of the United Nations Millennium Declaration. All 189 United Nations member states and at least 23 international organizations committed to help achieve these goals by the year 2015.

Open Working Group: One of the main outcomes of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), held in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012, was the agreement by Member States to launch a process to develop a set of sustainable development goals (SDGs). The Open Working Group (OWG) of the General Assembly is tasked with preparing a proposal on the SDGs.

Per the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), as of September 2013, please note the information in this resource will be updated by the IAPB as the process progresses.  The IAPB asks that those with inquiries about this process contact the IAPB.  The ICO will update the resource as needed, as soon as possible.
