The International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) creates position papers to take an official stance on important topics in ophthalmology. The position paper included here direct the ICO toward taking further action in continuing professional development (CPD) for eye care training programs.

Continuing Professional Development:  The purpose of Continuing Medical Education (CME) is to keep physicians current in their practice.  CME is a lifelong learning commitment to doctors' patients and society in general.

CPD includes and extends the CME concept by embracing the necessary elements of “Good Medical Practice,” such as knowledge, skills and performance, safety and quality, communication, partnership and teamwork, and maintaining trust.  The ICO recognizes and advocates the necessity of CPD consistent with the good practices.
