This presentation provides an overview of why societies exist and how they might function. It uses the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) and other organizations as examples of society programs and society development.  The presentation is meant to serve as a guide for societies who are considering programs and functionality as they develop.

Presented by ICO Executive Director William Felch at the ICO/MEACO Advisory Leadership Group for Sub-Saharan Africa meeting in Bahrain in March 2009.
