Whereas antipersonnel landmines are responsible for 26,000 injuries or deaths among civilians annually, and
Whereas 90% of all maimings and blindness, blast and fragmentations injuries caused by antipersonnel landmines are in the civilian population,
Whereas antipersonnel landmines are responsible for a significant amount of preventable blindness caused by blast and fragmentation injuries in 60 countries.
Be it resolved that the International Council of Ophthalmology supports the comprehensive international ban on the production, transfer and deployment of antipersonnel landmines worldwide.
