September 2000
Dear Mr. President,
Dear Colleague,
In Jerusalem, May 2000 the following resolution was adopted by the International Council of Ophthalmology:
Inequality in distribution of ophthalmologists and the ensuing inequity in eye care requires aggressive action.
Globalization means better international cooperation.
Therefore, the ICO strongly recommends to all teaching institutions of the IFOS members in developed countries that they make available 5 percent of their training positions for ophthalmic trainees from other countries, prioritizing those from countries with greatest need.
This in our view should be made a worldwide goal for 2002.
Yours Sincerely,
Professor G.O.H. Naumann, MD
President, ICO
