  • Cornea - New Developments in DED: Diagnosis and Treatment
The objective of this symposium is to help practitioners identify the most frequent ophthalmic diseases and to present the newest drugs and instruments used to treat dry eye disease.

*Simultaneous translation to English will be offered for both sessions conducted in Spanish.

The European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE), based in Rotterdam with 44 national member societies, is organizing an explosive session titled “Firework-Related Eye Injuries." Chaired by Dr. Jan Tjeerd de Faber, Prof. Frank Martin, and Prof. Tero Kivelä, the symposium will cover the top firework-related eye injuries found around the world, what countries ban fireworks, and the regulations in place.

The ICO endorses a global ban on consumer fireworks and encourages ICO member societies to advocate for legislation to ban consumer fireworks in their countries.

The Spanish Society of Implant-Refractive Ocular Surgery (SECOIR), also based in Madrid with 945 individual members, will hold their 33rd annual meeting within the WOC2018. 32 sessions conducted in Spanish (simultaneous translation to English will be provided for a select number of sessions) will span all four days of the Congress in addition to two plenary sessions on Sunday and Monday, June 17-18, 2018.

WOC2018 registrants are invited to attend all sessions. Their sessions will cover three subspecialty areas: Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgery. SECOIR's list of sessions will be posted to the WOC2018 Program page in the upcoming weeks.

The Societat Catalana d'Oftalmologia (SCO), based in Barcelona with 564 members, is organizing a session titled “Transition to DMEK: Is the Technique Already Standardized?” Chaired by Dr. Jose Güell, Dr. Juan Álvarez de Toledo, and Dr. Antoni Sabala, this session will include discussion on different DMEK techniques and graft manipulations, peeling techniques, preparation at eye bank, insertion, and much more.

The Barraquer Institute is a private organization providing comprehensive eye care since 1941. Rafael Barraquer, MD, PhD, is the WOC2018 President and his organization is assisting in many aspects of the Congress with a few areas outlined here:

  • Live Surgery
Surgery will be performed on Monday, June 18 from 14:00 to 17:30 at the Barraquer Institute and broadcasted live back into Hall 8.1 at the Fira Gran Via in high definition. The event will involve three operating rooms with a moderator describing each surgery. Attendees will observe the surgeries and have the ability to ask questions with the surgeons and moderator. This event is included in the registration fee and all registrants are invited to attend. As we get closer to the surgery date, check the website for more details about the surgeons and the procedures to be performed.
  • Health Screening Services
The Barraquer Institute along with A. Menarini Diagnostics are offering painless and preventive health screening services at WOC2018. Attendees will be able to check for the following:
    1. Diabetes with either an oral-glucose-tolerance test or a fasting blood sugar test
    2. Glaucoma with a tonometry test
    3. Cholesterol level with a simple blood test
    4. Blood pressure in both their arm and ankle for risks of hypertension

BI is also organizing a symposium titled "Current Options for the Treatment of Keratoconus and Ectasia: From Crosslinking to Intracorneal Rings to Keratoplasty." The session will be chaired by Dr. Rafael I. Barraquer, Dr. Luis Fernández-Vega, and Dr. Jorge Alió.
